Women's Self-Defense & Krav Maga
Women's Self-Defense & Krav Maga (Arlington, Massachusetts)
Our women’s self-defense and personal safety program has been offered free since 2010. We have trained thousands of women and young girls on how to stay safe, identify predatory individuals who have harmful intent towards, and physically defend themselves if attacked/assaulted. We continue to offer this program free – and without grants or external support – and look forward to doing so for many years to come. Women's Self DefenseOur women’s self-defense program is primarily about avoiding aggressive and violent situations by being able to identify the warning signs, whether situational or behavioral, that indicate an incident or interaction could contain harmful intent. Most violence, including that which targets women, usually starts face-to-face, with some form of verbal interaction. While many advertisements and media around women’s self-defense often portrays an “assailant” hiding and waiting to jump out and/or a woman being followed late at night in a public place etc., these are designed to play on fears rather than representing reality. In real-life women are most at risk from those they know and in private settings such as their homes or somebody else’s. Our program reflects this and equips women with the knowledge and skills they need to identify and navigate these potentially dangerous situations.
Rather than taking a “rules” based approach, that consists of a list of “do’s” and “don’ts” e.g. don’t walk down dark alley ways, don’t run when your listening to music on a headset etc., our program takes an evidentially and researched approach, teaching individuals they types of processes that predatory offenders use to select, target and gain access to those they victimize, and how to identify when such a process is being directed towards them. This allows those who have been targeted to either exit the environment or at the least be able to prepare themselves to deal with a physical assault.
Our self-defense component of the program teaches basic and easily replicable techniques and solutions for dealing with common types of threats and attacks. It also teaches ways to control and maintain range/distance, making it difficult for an assailant to launch an initial attack – this alone may prevent an assailant who is at the final strike phase of their process from being able to complete it.
