Israeli Krav Maga in Massachsetts
Welcome To Krav Maga Yashir
Welcome to Krav Maga Yashir! We teach authentic Israeli Krav Maga. Our training comes direct from Israel. Krav Maga is the official hand-to-hand fighting system of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) and is recognized internationally by law-enforcement agencies at the most practical, effective, and proven self-defense system in existence. Krav Maga meaning “contact combat” in Hebrew is designed to get an untrained individual with no previous martial arts experience, to be able to fight and defend themselves in the shortest possible time. Unlike traditional martial arts and combat sports where sparring matches/contests see competitors start at distance, and only have to deal with one, unarmed attacker, Krav Maga recognizes that real-life violent incidents usually start none-to-nose, happen when a person is surprised and unprepared, and may involve both weapons and multiple opponents. At our training center just a few miles north of Arlington, Massachusetts, we train for such events. If you would like to discover for yourself the effectiveness of Israeli Krav Maga for yourself, you can attend one of our beginner classes by clicking the button below.

About Krav Maga
Krav Maga couples the experiences of Imi Lichtenfeld, who grew up in Slovakia (Europe) in the 1930’s defending himself (and others) from Fascist street gangs, and the system of KAPAP (an acronym for Krav Panim a Panim, meaning “fighting face-to-face” in Hebrew), that was develop by the HAGANAH – the defense force for the Jewish population in British mandated Palestine. Imi who had witnessed how individuals trained in martial arts and combat sports, failed to perform as they would in the ring or on the mats, when attacked in real-life, wanted to create a system of self-defense/fighting that would be effective in these types of scenarios. To do this he looked at how people actually react when assaulted and modified and evolved the KAPAP program he’d been taught to reflect this. Originally the system was still referred to within the IDF as KAPAP, but from the mid 1960’s onwards it started to be referred to as Krav Maga. The system continues to evolve and be adapted, which is one of the reasons why Krav Maga Yashir, Head Instructor, Gershon Ben Keren continues to travel and train there. If you are interested in learning more about Krav Maga and its approach to reality-based violence you can click here to continue reading and/or you can sign up to one of our beginners Krav Maga classes (held at our training facility, which is a short drive from the center of Arlington, MA), by clicking the button below.
Beginner ClassesKrav Maga Books By Gershon Ben Keren
Real World Solutions to Real World Violence
Krav Maga is a reality-based self-defense system. That is, its techniques and solutions are based on real-life attacks and threats. To stay true to this idea, the photographs in “Krav Maga – Real World Solutions to Real World Violence” were taken in the locations where violent incidents occur e.g., in pubs and bars, near ATM’s, on public streets etc. Rather than just illustrate techniques the book explains the contextual factors that are important for understanding violent events and how to deal with them. In the book, Gershon Ben Keren draws upon criminological theories and research to explain the processes that violent offenders use to gain access to those they target and victimize. By explaining these processes, the reader is equipped with the knowledge and ability to predict, identify, and avoid violence before it occurs and better prepare themselves to fight if avoidance isn't possible.

Not all violence is the same, and to try and deal with aggressive incidents as if they were, is likely to escalate events, that could otherwise have been resolved non-physically. “Krav Maga – Tactical Survival” looks at the type of violent events that occur when individuals who didn’t come to a location, looking to act violently, do so because of “external” things that have happened to them i.e., they are not internally motivated, and looking to achieve/fulfill a predetermined goal, such as a mugger looking to take somebody’s wallet from them but have instead become aggressive because somebody has taken their place in a queue/line, or has knocked into them spilling their drink etc. In many of these situations it is possible to de-escalate the incident and avoid having to use physical force to resolve them. Proven and effective de-escalation methods to do this are detailed and described.

This book looks at three types of extreme violence that although not commonplace can result in devastating consequences: active shooter/killer events, car-jackings, and home invasions. The section on active shooters involved a systematic review and a study of over 140 unique incidents to identify the commonalities and differences between types of incidents e.g., the ways in which workplace shootings differ from those at educational facilities, and the similarities between shootings in public settings and those carried out at businesses and enterprises etc. The solutions presented in the book take these factors into account and applies Krav Maga solutions that were developed in Israel for dealing with them. The book also looks at the types of threats and attacks that take place in carjackings and home invasions and how these can be both prevented and responded to physically.

Head Instructor, Gershon Ben Keren (Krav Maga 5th Degree Black Belt), started his blog in 2012. Each week – sometimes more – he writes about Krav Maga, violence prevention and crime avoidance etc. Sometimes his articles are about Krav Maga techniques and tactics, while other times it may be how to apply criminological theories and models in a practical way, in order to avoid being targeted for violence etc. He also writes about events that have been in the news both locally and/or nationally and attempts to clarify them from both a procedural and academic perspective. The blog can be queried using keywords, using the form below, or accessed fully by clicking here.
